- watched Nadia Comaneci
- score the first perfect 10
- in gymnastics, at the
- 1976 Olympics. NadiaΓÇÖs score appeared on
- the scoreboard as a 1.0, to show a 10. When
- Mary Lou saw a 1.0 in her first gymnastic
- competition, she was really excited.
- Unfortunately, her score really was a 1.0.

- At the 1984 Olympics, 16-year-old Mary Lou
- -- a muscular 4' 9'' -- was ready to turn her
- 1.0 into a 10. This was her first major
- international competition. She had the same
- coach as Nadia, Bela Karolyi.

- After the first two events in the all-
- around competition, Mary Lou was in
- second place. During the
- floor exercise, she scored
- the first 10 of the
- competition. Then came
- her final event, the vault.
- Mary Lou needed to score a perfect 10 to win
- the gold medal -- and she did it!

- Mary Lou became the first U.S. gymnast to
- win the gold medal in the Olympic all-around
- event. Mary Lou also earned one silver and
- two bronze medals in individual events.
