  3.                                 watched Nadia Comaneci 
  4.                                 score the first perfect 10 
  5.                                 in gymnastics, at the 
  6. 1976 Olympics. NadiaΓÇÖs score appeared on 
  7. the scoreboard as a 1.0, to show a 10. When 
  8. Mary Lou saw a 1.0 in her first gymnastic 
  9. competition, she was really excited. 
  10. Unfortunately, her score really was a 1.0.

  12. At the 1984 Olympics, 16-year-old Mary Lou 
  13. -- a muscular 4' 9'' -- was ready to turn her 
  14. 1.0 into a 10. This was her first major 
  15. international competition. She had the same 
  16. coach as Nadia, Bela Karolyi.

  18. After the first two events in the all-
  19. around competition, Mary Lou was in 
  20.                                 second place. During the 
  21.                                 floor exercise, she scored 
  22.                                 the first 10 of the 
  23.                                 competition. Then came 
  24.                                 her final event, the vault. 
  25. Mary Lou needed to score a perfect 10 to win 
  26. the gold medal -- and she did it!

  28. Mary Lou became the first U.S. gymnast to 
  29. win the gold medal in the Olympic all-around 
  30. event. Mary Lou also earned one silver and 
  31. two bronze medals in individual events.
